Resorts World Manila: Gunman sparks panic at Philippines hotel

Resorts World Manila was put on lockdown after the incident, which happened shortly after midnight local time (16:00 GMT).

Swat teams were deployed to the scene, and TV footage showed people fleeing the hotel in panic.

The Philippines police chief said they did not believe it was a terror attack.

Ronald dela Rosa said a lone gunman had entered the gaming area at Resorts World and set some tables on fire.

Gunshots were fired, he said, but were not aimed at people in the room.

At least 11 people, including five police officers, were taken to hospitals, police Lt. Catherine Buckley said. Authorities were still trying to determine if anybody was left inside the building Friday evening.

"I do not have any confirmation of fatalities at this point," Buckley said.

A number of people were evacuated during the standoff — some wrapped in blankets in the blowing snow — to a nearby Veterans Administration clinic.

The shooter was known to officers from previous arrests for minor crimes, but Forsyth County Sheriff Duane Piper would not release the man's name or details of his previous run-ins with the law. He said the victims and the shooter all lived at the house.

"We'd like to find a motive. There's no reason that any of us are ever going to understand to wipe an entire family. We have absolutely no clue at this point what precipitated it," Piper said.
