South Korea 2 Germany 0

Joachim Low's side went into the game needing to match or better Sweden's result against Mexico, but they failed to break down Korea's dogged resistance and were undone at the last as Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min netted, while the Scandinavians romped to a 3-0 victory.

If World Cup-winning head coach Low thought his problems were behind him after a superb second half in Germany's 2-1 win over Sweden in their second Group F game, he was wrong, and the inclusion of Mesut Ozil in the front four did little to inspire his turgid team.

Lozano goal causes earthquake

According to the Instituto de Investigaciones Geologicas and Atmosfericas' seismic monitoring network, a spike in activity was recorded after Lozano struck against the world champions.

"The #sismo detected in Mexico City originated artificially," the organisation posted on social media.

"Possibly by massive jumps during the goal by Mexico in the World Cup."

World Cup Journeys: Can Mesut Ozil the pass master assist Germany to a defence of its title?

In a country that has seen millions of migrants take up German citizenship, Germany has fielded an increasingly multicultural team at each successive World Cup since hosting the event in 2006.

Alongside the likes of Sami Khedira (who has a Tunisian father), Jerome Boateng (Ghanaian father) and Marko Marin (Bosnian-Serb heritage), Ozil is a third-generation Turkish-German, who says his ancestry comes from north-western Turkey. He credits his style of play to his heritage, but his attitude to his country of birth.

Germany 0 Brazil 1

The game marked the first senior meeting between the heavyweights since a remarkable World Cup semi-final in 2014 when Germany thumped the stunned hosts Brazil 7-1 in Belo Horizonte.

While the result will not erase the humiliation of one of Brazilian football's darkest nights, the nature of their performance suggests they are approaching their best as they look to land a sixth World Cup.

Young England held by Germany

After a number of injuries had plagued Gareth Southgate's side, he named three debutants in his starting line-up, with Jordan Pickford, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham all earning their first senior caps.

The first half produced a number of entertaining moments, but in front of a sell-out crowd in north London, the second half failed to match it as neither side could produce a goal.

It brings an end to the three-game winning streak for Germany at Wembley and is the first time they have failed to score against England since Euro 2000.

Boateng considered Bayern exit

Boateng, who joined Bayern from Manchester City in 2011, has been a key member of the Bayern side that are on a run of five consecutive Bundesliga titles.

But a thigh injury sustained at Euro 2016 preceded a campaign ravaged by fitness problems last time around, with the 29-year-old restricted to 13 Bundesliga appearances.

In an interview with Kicker, Boateng explained he was left pondering whether it was time for a fresh start and took his concerns to the Bayern board during Carlo Ancelotti's time in charge.

Carrot-coloured car damaged by hungry donkey

On 15 September last year, Markus Zahn left his bright orange McLaren Spider in a car park bordering a paddock in Vogelsberg, a district in Hesse state.

A donkey called Vitus then chomped on the back of his car, he said. The court found Vitus's owners liable for €5800 of paintwork damage.

Police said Vitus may have confused the car with a carrot.

The donkey's owners could still appeal.

The owners argued that Vitus may not have been the culprit and that Mr Zahn should not have parked his car - reportedly worth €310,000 - next to the paddock.

Fij praised for taking on COP23 presidency

Germany is hosting the UN climate change meeting this November in Bonn.

At a side event this week at the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr Flasbarth linked the possibilities that can be derived when two different nations work together to build awareness on climate change.

At the same event, the Fiji prime minister Frank Bainimarama reiterated the importance of working closely with Germany.

Celebrating PNG’s Independence in Germany

On 16 September, over 50 Papua New Guineans gathered at Bernd and Margaret Nickel’s residence in Berlin. They were joined by Papua New Guinea’s Ambassador to Germany and the European Union.

The garden party celebration featured cultural perfomances from New Ireland and Central, supported by performances from the Indonesian Province of West Papua and the Cook Islands. Papuan New Guinean arts and craft were also displayed.

Ambassador Joshua Kalinoe thanked his countrymen and their families for promoting the PNG culture and heritage abroad.

Trump-shaped ecstasy pills seized

The drugs were confiscated over the weekend, police say, and an Austrian father and son have been arrested.

It is thought the drugs would have been sold on the internet under the slogan "Trump makes partying great again".

Ecstasy pills can sometimes kill drug takers but more commonly induce nausea, panic, paranoia and agitation.

Experts in the UK have warned the drug is getting stronger, leading to a rise in the number of people going to hospital for treatment for mental and behavioural issues.
