PPC GEWE New members sworn

Governor Powes Parkop (Chairman), Governor Allan Bird (Deputy Chairman) and Committee members Marsh Narewec, Ricky Morris and Lohia Boe Samuel took their oath of office on November 30 2022. 
They all committed to use their mandate to progress women’s empowerment and to continue previous efforts to tackle gender-based violence.   

Fostering Employment Security

Last year, Speaker of Parliament Job Pomat approved the institution’s new organizational and management structure.

Clerk of Parliament, Kala Aufa said the new contracts ensure a performance-based approach with Key Result Areas (KRAs) and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that are used to measure desired organizational outcomes for the Service, as a ‘modern, engaging, and efficient Parliament’ in the region.

UN Women, Media Reinforce Partnership

UN Women is an agency for Gender Equality and the empowerment of women. The breakfast meeting is part of their efforts to strengthen their partnerships with the media in the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The event brought together editors and members from different media houses in Papua New Guinea.

Gender equality in PNG is doing poorly as there are high levels of gender-based violence which remains a challenge in the country and it is ranked 160 out of 162 in the gender equality index.

PwC promotes gender appreciation in high schools

Senisim Pasin is a campaign built around a film of the same name and tailored around the advocacy against Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Sorcery Related Accusation Violence (SARV). The program includes the film screening then open dialogue of the issues surrounding GBV and SARV such as Communication and Gender Appreciation and most importantly discussing solutions in the fight against violence.

Treat Women Equally: Dame Carol

Dame Kidu made this call while meeting with the first cohort of women attending the Leadership Academy for women at the Pacific Institute for Leadership and Governance (PILAG) in Waigani. Dame Kidu made the following statement which was endorsed by the women from 11 provinces.

Civil Society Organizations Call For Action

The call was made during a recent one-day forum on Gender Equality and Human rights.

The event was organized in observance of International Human Rights Day by UN Women and the Consultative and Implementation Monitoring Council (CIMC), with funding from the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative.

Civil Societies Call For Gov’t Action

This was presented to the Minister for Community Development and Religion, Wake Goi during a forum held this week.

Over 100 representatives from various CSOs participated in a one-day forum on Gender Equality and Human rights that was organized in observance of International Human Rights Day by UN Women and CIMC with funding from the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions on holding large gatherings, the main event was held in Port Moresby, with satellite events in Lae, Goroka, Mount Hagen and Kokopo.

Female Participation

Murema says Moresby South Rugby Football League has improved on having equal participation in their competition where young women are also able to play rugby league.

He says having both the men and women compete goes to show how Moresby South Rugby Football League is advancing.

“Here in Moresby South we recognize our female counter parts in Sports as we practice gender equality” said Murema.

He said the competition over the last 8 years has produced orchids and hunters that have represented the country well in international matches.

Information Materials launched on Sexual Harassment in workplaces

The information materials were designed by the sector’s Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion Community of practice which brings agency representatives together to share ideas and experiences on promoting more equitable and inclusive working environments.

The materials will be placed inside working places of the law and justice agencies for the purpose of informing the employees on different behaviours that contribute to sexual harassment, its consequences and the available support services.

Gender equality lowest in Pacific

Papua New Guinea for the first time does not have any female representative in the 10th parliament.

A disappointed Dame Meg said only Tuvalu, Samoa and now New Zealand have women in parliament.

Samoa has had women’s seats reserved that helps in women participating in politics and decision making.

Recently the World Economic Forum predicted that it will take at least six generations to fully address gender equality.
