Cowboys see promise in Fiji Sevens recruits

Sadrugu and Masikau, who was a member of the Fiji team that beat New Zealand in the final at this year's Tokyo Games, have been handed train and trial deals at North Queensland.

The pair had been on the radar of Cowboys recruitment manager Dane Campbell and he got the chance to see them in action an Oceania Rugby Sevens tournament in Townsville in June.

"I'd known of them from watching some vision," Campbell told NRL.com. "For them both to be here in Townsville, watching them up close, we got an understanding of some of the athletic traits and skills they had."

Fiji Govt Rewards 7s Star

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed this afternoon. Tuwai will be recognized for his achievements, as he is the only player to have won two Olympic gold medals, won the Hong Kong 7s titles for five years in a row and the World Rugby 7s Player of the Decade.

Bainimarama has confirmed this is only part of a one million dollar package for the entire 7s and Fijiana teams.

The Prime Minister says the government has purchased a residential lot at the lucrative Tacirua East Subdivision valued at $141,700 for Tuwai, and $33,300 for the construction of a home.

Fiji sevens team begins search for new coach

The current coach, Ben Ryan, is stepping down as his contract expires.

Under Ryan, the team has dominated the world Sevens circuit, and last month won the country's first ever gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games.

The rugby union's chief executive, John O'Connor, extended his gratitude to Ryan, who plans to return to Britain and take a break from rugby.

However, he said Ryan was welcome to re-apply should he have a change of heart.

The position is expected to be advertised next week, along with the position of head coach for women's rugby.
