FBI investigating Russian hack of New York Times reporters

The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.

The FBI declined to comment and a spokesperson for The New York Times would not confirm the attacks or the investigation.

Kun Shan "Joey" Chun, 46, admitted in federal court in Manhattan on Monday that he violated his security clearance on several occasions between 2011 and 2016 in an effort to pass on secret information to China in exchange for money.

Chun is a 19-year FBI veteran from Brooklyn who was born in China but was employed by the FBI in 1997. His duties with the FBI included "accessing sensitive and, in some instance, classified information."

Two days later, on Sunday, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz announced her resignation and now had no major role on the party's convention stage.

Many of the leaked emails indicted that the top DNC officials were actively working against the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders and strongly favoring Hillary Clinton over Sanders during the primaries, when they were supposed to be neutral.

The controversy ruined the start of the DNC's national convention in Philadelphia and forced the Wasserman Schultz to resign.

Privacy row over FBI iris scan 'trial'

It amounted to "runaway surveillance", director of technology Nicole Ozer tweeted.

The FBI said it was developing "best practices" for iris image capture.

Apple continues its privacy fight against the FBI

In court documents filed on Friday (April 15), Apple bosses quoted the head of the FBI, throwing his own words back at him to prove a point on privacy.

"[L]itigation is a terrible place to have any kind of discussion about a complicated policy issue," Apple quoted James Comey as saying.
