Communities urged to talk with police

His statement follows a meeting set up between frustrated Kirakira elders and Eda Ranu officials over the disconnection of water.

The villagers set up roadblocks this morning, prompting police to interfere and hold talks with them.

The villagers claimed there was no water to the village for the past three weeks as well as sporadic supply prior to this.

Village elder concerned

Councillor Arutu Bake says the roadblocks this morning were a sign of frustration not only for themselves but for their women and children.

The councillor says the meeting with the NCD metropolitan superintendent is welcomed by him and his fellow elders, who would like to see a way forward with the issue.

The elder reiterated that this situation will hopefully be resolved as soon as dialogue is undertaken from all relevant parties concerned.

Kirakira villagers block off road

The roadblock has been in place since this morning and has caused disruptions to the flow of traffic into the nearby area of Sabama leading up to the Manu Autoport area.

Police are on hand to monitor the situation as elders meet with them and Eda Ranu officials.

For now the situation is quiet with youth just diverting traffic back out from the main road area.

Metropolitan police commander, Perou N’Dranou, has indicated that mediation will be used to facilitate for a positive outcome for both parties.

Eda Ranu ready for APEC

Managing director Henry Mokono said like all state departments and agencies, the company is taking their role seriously in preparing for the global event.

Eda Ranu began preparations for this year’s APEC Summit early in 2017.

And discussions so far have been progressive, according to Mokono.

“Our planning started last year, in terms of waste removal. We’ve already got plans to remove waste from these large cruise liners.

“We’re expecting three cruise liners and two Australian war ships, who will be berthed here and three will be berthing at Waterfront.

Over K1bn needed for new sewerage facility

Eda Ranu managing director, Henry Mokono, said it was a long term plan to have a similar facility to the Joyce Bay JICA backed project, however, funding is a major concern.

Mokono said while they still want to maintain the current facility, the ongoing developments around the facility are prompting the need for an upgrade.

Mokono said the state company is trying as much as possible to maintain the current facility as it is cheaper to operate and is one of the best methods to deal with sewerage waste globally.

POM water supply to be disrupted today

Eda Ranu is conducting emergency repairs on a break on supply mains at Six-Mile and Ela Beach.

All of Seven-Mile, domestic and international terminals, Six-Mile, Gordon’s, all Government offices at Waigani, Parliament house, MVIL, all of Town area and Touaguba will be affected.

“We had a break on supply mains this morning hence our team is currently working at the respective locations to restore supply,” says Eda Ranu.

“It will take some time to work on the breaks.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” says the organisation.

Push for Eda Ranu and Water PNG merger

He made the announcement in a media conference in Port Moresby today.

The Minister for Planning and Implementation said the merger of the two institutions will save about K10 million which the Government can use to fund other projects in the rural districts.

Minister Maru said he is taking an NEC Submission to establish the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Authority to drive the implementation of the policy forward, provide leadership and coordination within the sector and for the NEC to look into the merger of Water PNG and Eda Ranu.

Eda Ranu warns water users to be on alert

This warning has been established after certain criminal elements donned in Eda Ranu uniforms gaining access to properties in the pretext of reading the water meter or delivering water bills, end up robbing customers.

Eda Ranu Managing Director Henry Mokono said the use of its uniforms by criminal elements to commit crimes is a serious offence and the Management will not hesitate to use the full brunt of the law on perpetrators who are caught.

He said consumers have a right to deny access to meter readers who fail to present any form of identification.

Criminals pose as Eda Ranu staff

Four youths, dressed in Eda Ranu uniforms, allegedly used that vehicle earlier this week to gain access into a private residence and pretended to check water pipes.

Fortunately, they left the place in a hurry as residents grew suspicious of their presence.

Police Operations have been notified to keep a lookout for this vehicle.

A similar incident also took place at Erima two weeks ago when a family lost a lot of their personal items to criminals wearing Eda Ranu uniforms. 

Water connection bill for Moresby South at K10 million

Local MP and Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko said with partnership of NCD Governor Powes Parkop many people are now having access to clean drinking water after 30 years.

In this term or Parliament, Moresby – South Electorate and NCDC have contributed K5 million each in the last five years.          

“This is a success story for open MP working with the Governor,” Tkatchenko said. 

“Next project that have been costed are Dodo Heights at Sabama and Bundi and also other areas in the Moresby South that need water.
