UPNG Sepik Students Rise To Assist

The fight between the local Mengar villagers and the Basis settlers erupted a week ago, from a volleyball game that went out of hand, escalating to destruction of properties and loss of lives.

Yesterday at the UPNG Forum Square, a small number of East Sepik students set up table to kick-start their appeal for disaster relief for their people in Wewak.

According to the appeal leader, third-year Banking and Finance student, Stanford Walehau, the assistance will go to the Basis community whose houses have been burnt to the ground.

First 50 ESP students flown out of Lae

"First 50 students, mostly first year students, travelled to Wewak and Port Moresby today," said Andrew Wiavi, patron of the Unitech East Sepik Students Association.

More of them are expected to depart Nadzab Airport tomorrow.

He told Loop PNG that 28 students flew to the East Sepik capital and 22 to Port Moresby from the traveling list of 140 students.

East Sepik Provincial Government had stepped in to assist its displaced human resource.

"I thank Sir Michael Somare for his swift response," Wiavi said.
