K20,000 backing for Frangipani festival

A cheque of K20,000 was presented to the event organiser, Susie McGrade, of the Rabaul Historical Society earlier this week.

Grandfather guilty of rape

Acting Judge David Susame convicted the man in Kokopo recently after a trial.

The incident took place when the girl was 15 years old. The man was the biological brother of the girl’s grandfather and was living with the family.

The court was told at 4 in the afternoon, on 30th June 2011, the accused met the girl outside of Anderson’s Supermarket where she was waiting to catch a PMV to Gelegele.

110 games for Puara

After the 2018 Intrust Super Cup round 23, Wartovo Puara Jnr has now played a total of 110 games, and isn’t showing any sign of slowing down.

Puara Jnr has been with the SP PNG Hunters since 2014.

From Vunadidir in East New Britain Province, the 28-year-old started off with his local club, the Rabaul Agmark Gurias, in 2011.

After three years with the Gurias, he joined the SP Hunters and boasts the title of ‘the most kept player’, alongside teammate Adex Wera.

“The experience has been good for us,” Puara said.

Frustrations reach boiling point, students clash with villagers

ENB provincial police commander, Joseph Tabali, said the crux of the issue was similar to that of Gelegele; constant harassment and attack of students and staff by locals in surrounding villages.

“Those nearby villagers have been attacking students and robbing them when they catch bus from Kokopo to the campus,” PPC Tabali told Loop PNG.

He further pointed out a number of cases that had eventually led to the clash on Sunday, May 27th.

SP Export claims naming rights to Mask Festival

A contract was signed yesterday in Port Moresby between the Festival Committee and SP Brewery to formalise an undisclosed sponsorship package.

The agreement solidifies a potentially long term partnership between the committee and the Brewery.

SP Brewery Marketing Manager, Josh Wheeler, said today that cultural preservation in a constantly evolving world is critical for Papua New Guinea.

And they are proud to be supporting the Festival preserve PNG culture for future generations.

ENB Christmas operations underway

ENB Provincial Police Commander, Joseph Tabali, is appealing to the people of East New Britain to make it their business to keep their celebrations indoors.

He said for residents to be mindful of the recent breakout at the Kerevat prison and that police are still on high alert in recapturing them.

“Especially for women and young girls, they should not be seen walking around alone but be accompanied by a male figure.”

He adds that due to the recent breakout of escapees, it is still quite unsafe for residents to be roaming about this festive season.

New projects for Pomio communities

The projects will be co-funded by Digicel PNG Foundation and the local member’s office and Minister for Public Service, Elias Kapavore.

Pomio is the first district in the 10th government to work in collaboration with Digicel PNG Foundation to respond to the community’s health and education needs.

Digicel PNG Foundation CEO, Beatrice Mahuru, said the Foundation seeks opportunities to work together to leverage resources, share strengths, increase efficiency and reduce overlap to tackle PNG’s social issues.

PNGIPA steps up regional training

PNGIPA, a core partner of the Pacific Leadership and Governance Precinct, recently launched its Project Management course in Kokopo, East New Britain Province.

The Project Management course was attended by more than 20 participants and marked a significant landmark for PNGIPA.

The Precinct is supporting PNGIPA’s training delivery which includes increased opportunities for vocational education in subnational areas and improvements to regional training centres.

​Township gears up for Frangipani Festival

Residents in the province are gearing up for a joint celebration that is expected to start today, September 15th, and will continue on to the 18th in collaboration with the 22nd anniversary of the twin volcanic eruptions of both Tavurvur and Vulcan.

The festival celebrates the survival of Rabaul after the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions that almost completely destroyed the Rabaul Township.

ENB shootout leaves one dead

The deceased (identified), from Kabakaul, Kokopo, was allegedly part of a 5-man group that robbed a mobile phone shop on Saturday, according to provincial police commander Joseph Tabali.

“Five armed suspects held up a taxi driver and directed him to the Zero Mobile Shop, where one of them stayed with him while the other four went inside,” PPC Tabali tells Loop PNG.

While the customers were ordered to lie flat on the floor, the men held up the shop owner and gathered all mobile phones, tablets and battery chargers into a bag, then tried to escape.
