Dual Citizenship

The Citizenship Advisory Committee now aims to complete screening of all this applications by then end of this year.

This was announce during the swearing in of the Citizenship Advisory Committee recently in Port Moresby.

The CAC was sworn in at Government by Governor General, Sir Bob Dadae.

The Committee includes, CAC Chairman and Talasea MP, Francis Maneke, Mul Baiyer MP, Koi Trappe, Department of Justice & Attorney General, Lawrence Kalinoe, and Chief Migration Officer, Solomon Kantha.

Larissa Waters, who represented Queensland and recently made headlines for becoming the first senator to breastfeed her child in Parliament, issued a tearful apology Tuesday.

"It's with great sadness that I have discovered that I'm a dual citizen and I'll be forced to stand down from my position in the Senate," said Waters who holds both Australian and Canadian citizenship.

Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister, Rimbink Pato, says this is a historic moment for PNG.

“PNG Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority have completed all work that is necessary for implementation of dual citizenship which will now enable people from the eight prescribed countries: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, Samoa, United Kingdom, Germany and the United States of America to apply for appropriate dual citizenship options,” reveals the Minister.

In a statement today, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Rimbink Pato, said the arrangement will be ready once all administrative arrangements are finalized.

He said the delay in the legislative amendments certified at the end of 2016 has been completed and will now enable administrative steps to move forward.

“Dual Citizenship is a new concept for Papua New Guineans and creates great opportunities for our people at home and around the world.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato said the recent passing of the Dual Citizenship Bill in Parliament concerns the consequential amendments made to the Constitution and the Citizenship Act, which will enable the grant of dual citizenship to persons qualified under the criteria set out by these amendments.
