K15 million for Mendi Hospital improvement

He was in Ialibu District Hospital recently where he presented a K15 million cheque to the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority (SHPPHA) towards infrastructure facilities improvement at the Mendi Provincial Hospital.

On Thursday 01st February, Dr. Tom presented the funding in a small but significant event successfully hosted by SHPPHA at Ialibu District Hospital. 

Dr. Tom was accompanied by the Department Secretary, Dr Osbone Liko, SHPPHA Deputy Board Chair and Chief Surgeon, Dr. Okti Poki and Jason Ugum from the National Department of Health.

PNG is co-host to Malaria Elimination Summit

Minister for Health and HIV, Dr. Lino Tom made this announcement after the PNG Government made a commitment last December.

The Health Minister said, “Hosting the Leaders’ Summit will be a timely opportunity for countries in the Melanesian region to share their achievements, renew political will, and address challenges to achieving elimination by 2030.”

“This high level forum will be aligned under Papua New Guinea’s Vision 2050 as well as the theme of the National Health Plan 2021-2030: ‘Leaving No-One Behind is Everybody’s Business’.

Christian Health Services hold 53rd General Assembly

Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS, Dr. Lino Tom at the conference acknowledged the Christian Health Services as being older than the country itself and congratulated the churches for their role in bringing modernization into the country.   

He went on to say that if it was not for the churches, people would still be wearing tanget leaves to cover their nakedness and would still be living in primitive style of living.

Doctor-patient ratio uneven

According to the standard doctor-to-people ratio set by the World Health Organization is 1:1000; however, that is not the case in PNG as one doctor is serving 17,000 patients. This is alarming.

Minister for Health Dr Lino Tom shared this in parliament today.

Morobe Governor Luther Wenge has asked Minister Tom to bring in overseas doctors to support the health workforce in the country.

Dr Tom also raised concerns that the medical school in the country is also producing a constant number of doctors not exceeding 60 every year which is a big problem in the country.

Wabag DDA to be responsible for market

He was speaking at an MOU signing to hand over the ownership of the Wabag Town Market to the District Development Authority. 

The people in the Wabag Open electorate have been without a proper market since 2012.

Before taking up the office of the Wabag Open MP, Dr. Tom made Wabag market one of his key priority projects as for far too long, the people of Wabag have suffered since work on the market development was stalled.
