Man sentenced 25 years for killing wife

Jeffery Saa was sentenced by the Waigani National Court on Monday after he stabbed his wife in full view of the public on 14 March 2014 at Waikele market, Gerehu Stage 6 following an argument.

The deceased was selling betel nut at the market when she was approached by her husband who was armed with a knife.

Saa stabbed his wife in the back with a knife which penetrated through her chest wall piercing her heart which indicated that a substantial amount of force was exerted to inflict such wound.

Domestic violence against women and girls is rampant throughout the world and PNG is no exception as reported in the media every day however, there are lawful avenues to sorting out domestic disputes. 

These were the remarks of Justice Panuel Mogish when imposing a sentence term of 25 years with hard labour to a former employee of the Justice Department, who viciously stabbed his wife to death at the Waikele market at Gerehu stage 6. This followed an argument on 14 March, 2014.

Central man get life sentence for barbaric death of wife

A National Court sitting in Bomana covering cases from the Central province sentenced Sogeri man Tauba Liam to life in jail after he killed the mother of his child in a barbaric and vicious attack in broad daylight.

Liam pleaded guilty to wilfully murdering his spouse on May 6, 2015 at Girimu village, Sogeri in  the Central Province.

Armed with a knife, he slashed her on her throat and then repeatedly stabbed her on her breast and other parts of her body.

FSV police unit helps Ruth

Ruth met with domestic abuse coordinator of the Family and Sexual Violence (FSV) unit Sgt Job Eremugo today at their office at Gordon’s Police Barracks.

Ruth reported that since she has spoken out, she continues to receive threats from her husband via calls and text messages.

Eremugo confirmed that the matter is now with his unit and will be taken up to the chief magistrate for the family court.

He will represent Ruth to seek a restraining order that was set aside by the family court in Port Moresby only two months after she obtained it.

Arrest policemen for professional negligence: Polye

Opposition Leader Don Polye called on Police Commissioner Gari Baki to arrest and charge those responsible for professional negligence.

Polye was shocked to learn about professional negligence of police officers on a victim of domestic violence.

He made the call when commenting on 42-year-old Ruth Apinas who broke the silence on Loop PNG of her suffering at the hands of her violent husband.

Ruth to finally get help

The coordinator of the Family and Sexual Violence Unit (FSVU), Chief Inspector David Kila, has agreed to meet with her tomorrow (Tuesday).

The mother of three thanked Loop PNG for the support and is grateful that she will finally receive the help she needs.

Ruth told Loop how she lived through “hell” for ten years. In one instance, a bottle was smashed on the back of her head and in a separate incident; a wine glassed was whammed in her face, just missing her eyes.

Police ready to assist Ruth

The Coordinator of the Family and sexual violence unit, Chief Inspector David Kila responded to LOOP PNG’s story at the weekend.

“If you have this abused wife’s contact numbers, please ask her to call me and we will take it from there,” Kila wrote on our shared story on Facebook.
