​IEA launches inaugural domestic violence policy

The policy caters for staff and students who are victims of, or witness, domestic and any other form of violence.

The IEA has always held a zero tolerance policy towards violence of any kind.

In recent years, it has become increasingly obvious that the level of domestic and community violence within the country is alarmingly high, thus impacting the school negatively in several ways.

NRI to launch Domestic Violence policy

PNG NRI Human Resource Manager Stephanie Manas said the core message of the policy is that domestic violence is everybody’s business.

The new PNG NRI Domestic Violence Policy is underpinned by three core principles:

1. The protection of PNG NRI staff and their families is a paramount priority of the Institute;

2. PNG NRI has a holistic view of domestic violence, recognising that it destroys families and devastates communities; and

Two early childhood educators from Tasmania, Judi Rhodes and Tanya McQueen, were struck by the lack of resources to help. So they made one themselves.

Queenie's Little Book of Comfort follows Queenie the quoll who, when faced with family violence, seeks help from her neighbour Eric the echidna.

"We decided to create this little book about Queenie because we were so heartbroken about the amount of children that come to school or play group that are trying to survive family violence," Ms Rhodes said.

Manus police investigate 20yo’s suicide

Provincial Police Commander Chief Inspector David Yapu (pictured) said the deceased’s body was found hanging from a tree after she went missing from June 21 to June 23.

Her body was discovered at Bush camp, Lombrum Naval base, on June 23. 

The deceased has been identified as Doris Moipe, who transferred to Manus to continue her education after completing Grade 10 at the Good Shepherd High School in Madang Province.

She was to continue her education but ended up marrying a Manus man instead.

Domestic violence increasing in NCD

 

The opening of the new FSC building plays a key part in expanding work space to cater for more victims to come and get the much needed help available in the Centre.

FSC Health Extension Officer, Olivia Ephraim said the centre receives 20 new cases every day and this excludes the follow ups.

The centre has four medicals, two HEO’s, three support staffs and councilors’ and three social workers showing a lack in manpower.

Mining company promotes anti- violence message

“PNG is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman or girl, with an estimated 70 per cent of women experiencing rape or assault in their lifetime,” the 2016 World Report stated.  

“While such acts have long been criminalied and domestic violence was specifically proscribed under the 2013 Family Protection Act, few perpetrators are brought to justice.”

A mining company on the island of New Ireland is using cycling to promote the anti-violence message.

Kange allowed K5000 bail

Despite four previous bail applications made and refused in the National Court (two applications) and Supreme Court (two applications), the court was satisfied this time around that circumstances had changed since the last bail application was moved, thus bail was allowed.

Kange’s case in the District court was committed for trial on March 28 after it found there was enough for him to stand trial.

​Lufa man pleads guilty, sentence to be handed down

George Hanio and his lawyer asked the court for a non-custodial sentence, after he admitted to the charge of causing grievous bodily harm.

The maximum penalty sentence for that charge is seven years in jail.  

His lawyer said he paid his former wife K4,000 for her injuries and they had since reconciled.

The Eastern Highlands man is a heart patient on prescribed drugs and currently has sole custody of their children after his wife left him.   

Russian tattoo artist helps women hide the scars of domestic violence

Yevgeniya Zakhar posted an ad on her social media page last year offering to ink abused women for free after she heard about a Brazil tattoo artist already offering the service.

Soon, she was flooded with requests.

Hearing her clients' stories of beatings and burnings, though, was so stressful that she had to limit the number of women she sees to one day a week.

"I didn't expect to be inundated with visits," said Ms Zakhar, who works in Ufa, a city about 1,200 kilometres east of Moscow.

Wife killer locked away for 13 years

Danny Keko from Mehenav village pleaded guilty to killing his wife, Ekim Danny on April 4, 2015 at the Garden Hills market in Port Moresby.

The incident took place around 7:30pm after a scuffle took place between the couple. Keko then removed a kitchen knife from his wife’s billum and stabbed her in the back as was trying to run away from him. She later died from her stab wounds.

The argument arose over an affair after the woman returned to her husband in 2015.
