Non-payment sees elderly man jailed

Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika of the Waigani National Court today sentenced Tom Rangip to serve an outstanding sentence of two years at the Bomana Correctional Institute.

Rangip, in his 60s, was sentenced on Feb 29 to three years’ imprisonment. However, he was given six months to repay all monies owed.

He appeared in Court with his lawyer to give an update on the progress of his repayment but it came before the attention of the court that no monies had been repaid yet.

Woman still repaying over K66,000 taken from cancer society

Margaret Ani of Pari village, Port Moresby, appeared in court before Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika today and gave an update of her repayment progress.

Her lawyer told the court she has repaid K5,000 so far and is expecting her Nasfund savings to be released by the end of the month.

She has an outstanding K61,000 to repay within the next five months.

“You continue to make your repayment. You honour what you told the court at the time. You still have five months to go and I urge you to make those payments,” Sir Gibbs told Ani and her lawyer.

Kange gets another attempt at bail

Felix Kange’s lawyer filed a bail application this morning which was heard by Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika this afternoon.

A decision on the bail application will be handed down tomorrow morning at 9:30.

The facts of the bail application moved today surround the same circumstances of which Kange is accused for shooting his wife, the late Morove on the night of May 14.

This application moved today comes after the National Court on June 6, refused bail for the accused, who was facing a charge of manslaughter.
