Prioritise Cyber Security

Director of Ark Cyber Security Consultants, David Tekwie has urged the government and organizations to priorities funding and resources in the cyber security sector.

Cyber safety and security issues is ever revolving, and the country and organizations are being urged to prioritize relevant technologies to create a stable environment in preventing cyber-attacks.

Data Governance Vital

The Digital ID and Data Governance session received input speakers from the Department of Information Communication Technology (DICT), YuTru, a digital trust framework, and the Civil and Identity Registry.

Robert Asari, Executive Manager, DICT Digital Government & Shared Services said data must be seen as an asset in order for it to have value and be used in value chains.

Digital Bill To Address Cyber Security

He said once enacted, the Bill will give powers and enforcement mechanisms for the Department, as it contains the governance framework required to establish ICT governance across all public bodies.

“As Minister responsible, I will continue to push for the Digital Government Bill 2021 to be enacted in the November Parliament Seating,” Minister Masiu said.

He raised this after the Government’s Integrated Management Financial System (IMFS) was hit by a ransomware cyber attack last week.

VIDEO: Telecommunication Proposal update

Cyber security and combating scams, universal accessibility, strengthening institutional and human capacity and broadband access and Application are at the top of the list.

The proposal has ticked off all requirements and approvals and will be submitted to the World Telecommunity Development Conference for further deliberation.

Cyber security: Experts warn on rise of hacker ransoms

Ransomware, which makes devices unusable until their owners pay to unlock them, has become increasingly prevalent in the past year, they say.

Devices holding photos, emails and fitness information could be targeted.

The risk to business is "significant and growing", the National Crime Agency and National Cyber Security Centre say.

The joint report from the NCA and the NCSC says cyber crime is becoming more aggressive.

More devices connecting to the internet meant opportunities for criminals, the report said.

Security firms 'overstate hackers' abilities to boost sales'

Dr Ian Levy, technical director of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, made the accusation in a speech.

He said the firms played up hackers' abilities to help them sell security hardware and services.

Overplaying hackers' skills let the firms claim only they could defeat attackers, a practice he likened to "witchcraft".

In a keynote speech at the Usenix Enigma security conference, Dr Levy said it was dangerous to listen only to firms that made a living from cybersecurity.
