For many years now, the people of the once peaceful Kavieng town have demanded for the removal of illegal settlers causing serious crimes in the province.

Sir Julius said the provincial government would work with the people and police to make New Ireland safe again.

Communities surrounding Kavieng town had retaliated in an attempt to cleanse the town from petty criminals, following a hold up and acts of violence on an elderly from Maiom village.

In a statement Acting Provincial Administrator, Moses Taram said a letter has been sent to the National Pandemic Controller requesting for the implementation of curfew in the province.

A number of people are reported to have been shot at a protest in Lekki, a suburb of the city.

A 24-hour curfew planned for Lagos, a key commercial hub and Africa's most populous city with an estimated 20 million residents, was delayed to allow commuters to return home.

Other regions are now imposing curfews.

Following reports of widespread violence across Nigeria, the city of Jos and Ekiti state said curfews would come into force later on Tuesday.

The National Disaster Management Office advises people that a total public curfew is now in effect across the country.

The latest measure is to restrict movement and ensure the safety of all Fijians. Only essential service vehicles will be permitted to travel.
