Vare, Ruma star in T20 Bash

Both women have been in good touch and were again yesterday, untroubled by the Lewa Legends bowling attack.

In the morning game, the Cricket PNG Board XI were sent into bat by the Legends and opened with Naoani Vare and Baia John. They shared in an opening partnership of 64 before John was run out by Hannah Kalua for 34 of just 38 balls with three boundaries.

The wicket however, did not relieve the pressure on the Legends bowlers as Vare 59 not out and Tanya Ruma 31 not out, saw out the remaining overs to post a highly competitive 1/139.

Barras Bash T20 Launch

The tournament is part of the Barras and Lewas lead up preparations to the upcoming ICCT20 World Cup which will be held Oman in October and November this year.

The tournament launch coincided with the donation of a brand new Isuzu TWD ute to be used as part of the PNG Barras campaign for their historic ICCT20 World Cup appearance this year.

Cricket gets 70K funding boost

Cricket PNG board secretary, Michael Harrison, received it on behalf of Cricket PNG.

“We want to acknowledge the support from a local insurer, Capital Insurance Limited Group, for the funding assistance. The fund will into supporting our cricket program from development programs to the elite level,” said Harrison.

Capital Insurance public relations officer, Adrian Wamp, said as a locally-owned insurer, Capital Insurance Group is dedicated to helping the community as part of their efforts in promoting sustainable community development.

Cricket PNG To Start Comp

The approval was a relieve for both the domestic competition and Cricket PNG’s preparations towards the upcoming international events.

Cricket PNG Domestic Competition Manager, Lakani Oala said following the approval granted this week, all scheduled programs could go ahead.

This would include the domestic competition and lead up preparations towards the ICC T20 for the PNG Baramundis and the Samoa Qualifier for the PNG Lewas.

Oala said while the PNG Baras squad was at training in clusters during the lockdown and the approval will now give the team more flexibility.

Kriket program applauded

“This program has won multiple international and domestic awards and has again been recognised with its nomination for the Stan Joyce Award at this year’s SP Sports Awards,” said CPNG.

“It has grown substantially since its inception and has now surpassed 1.5 million participants, which is an outstanding result. It provides employment for approximately 60 CPNG staff and has been used as a blueprint for other entry level programs now in use around the associate cricket world.

Cricket PNG reps compete over weekend

The tournament, played at the newly renovated Harrup Park complex, attracted 20 teams with CPNG players integrated into one of the sides, Flint Tropics.

CPNG had originally entered Australian based players Chad Soper, Jack Gardner, Joe Slater and assistant coach Nathan Reardon in the event, however, Slater unfortunately had to withdraw through illness.

With the team now one bowler short, CPNG national coach Carl Sandri was drafted into the team.

Financial literacy training for Cricket PNG

Bank South Pacific, the main sponsor of the BSP School Kriket Program, conducted the training session with nine officers and regional managers.

BSP’s banking education manager, Gabriel Nangile, stressed on the importance of putting money aside and spending less than what one earns.

Nangile encouraged the participants to have smart goals in life and be willing to reduce their expenses in order to have some savings for unexpected expenses and emergencies.

Isuzu National Cup postponed

In a statement, CEO Greg Campbell said: “With the escalation of the COVID-19 threat in Port Moresby and the subsequent 14-day lockdown imposed by the government, we and our sponsor, Boroko Motors, felt this decision was necessary to keep all players, officials and spectators safe.

Clean sweep for Mirigini in HLCC

The competition supported by Cricket PNG was run 22 years ago for under 10, 12 and 14 teams.

The wet weather did not stop the youngsters completing all games, which commenced last year in the school’s term four holidays.

Grand Final winners for all divisions was Team Mirigini, who defeated Gidare in under 10 division, defeated Friends in under 12, and defeated Gedu Rocks in under 14.  

Liklik Cricket Coordinator, Seura Loa, acknowledged founder and organizer Late William Arua Rarua for the initiative in support to cricket in the village.

Lewas star in Aust cricket champs

They are part of a combined ICC East Asia Pacific team involving players from the region including Japan, Samoa, Indonesia and Vanuatu, with PNG having the biggest representation.

Midway through this year’s competition, the EAP side has had an outstanding start, sitting on top of the ladder after winning four of their first five games, suffering their first loss in the fifth round against Victoria by 19 runs. Their wins so far have been over Western Australia by 38 runs, South Australia by 6 wickets, QLD by 8 wickets and NSW by 7 wickets in dominating performances.
