Woman gets 13 years for murder

Julina Henry from Liagam, Porgera will serve a prison term of 12-years, five months and two weeks after her time spend in remand at Bomana was deducted from the head sentence of 13 years.

She was convicted on Aug 25, 2016 for the murder of Naomi Henry, on July 21, 2015 at Wildlife in Port Moresby. Both women were married to the same man.

Justice Panel Mogish in sentencing her said the deceased instigated the attack that led to her demise.

The incident took place around 6:30 that morning after Henry went to her husband’s house looking for her son.

Men acquitted of murder

Jeffery Pitu, Jacob Lais and Newman Upas were charged with the murder of their relative, Matthew Masket on Feb 22, 2015.

Justice Panuel Mogish today acquitted them of the charge because he was of the view that Masket died as a result of the impact of the car crash at the tunnel between Stop N Shop and the RSPCA clinic.

He said this was a case of “who to believe” which the State did not prove beyond reasonable doubt.

Police commended in recovery of money

Justice Panuel Mogish said the recovery of the monies was a result of an intensive and speedy investigation conducted by police.

Robbery was perpetrated on Oct 4, 2013 and 20 days later on Oct 24, 2013, police conducted a raid on the offender’s house at Taurama.

He said these when handing his sentence against 40-year-old Thomas Karo to five years in jail after he deducted three years of time spent in remand and further suspended two years from an initial sentence of 11 years in prison.

Karo received K322, 660 as cash proceeds of crimes for his part in the robbery.

Bank robberies reflect on security companies

And a concerted effort by these two bodies is needed to assure customers that their monies are safe.

Criminal court judge, Panuel Mogish made these remarks today when sentencing Thomas Karo, a man who received stolen properties of K322,660 as his share for transporting part of the proceeds from the robbery to five years in jail.

He said the management of the two agencies involved in what he described as “the biggest robbery in the country” calls for an immediate review of its processes to avoid future mishaps.

Robbery accessory gets five year sentence

Justice Panuel Mogish of the Waigani National Court sentenced 40- year- old Thomas Karo, of Aroma, Central Province to serve a term of 11 years in jail.

He later dedicated time spend in remand (three years, three months, one week and two days) from the sentence and further suspended two years for Karo to be placed on a two year good behaviour bond after he is released from custody.

He said this case is not where sentence will be wholly suspended ordering Karo to serve  five years, eight months, two weeks and five days at the Bomana jail.
