Cocaine haul

Record drugs haul washes up on shore in Marshall Islands

About 649kg (1,430lbs) of cocaine was found hidden inside a vessel that had run ashore.

Police said the drugs were incinerated on Tuesday, apart from two packets, which have been sent to the US Drug Enforcement Administration for testing.

The drug haul has an estimated street value of $80m (£61m).

Drugs often wash ashore on the Marshall Islands, but last week's discovery set a new record.

The boat was found by a local resident on Ailuk atoll. Locals tried to move the vessel but were unable to due to its weight.

40 kg of cocaine seized from an island in Fiji

The operation was initiated when the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) was tipped off that there were bars found on an island in Lau believed to contain illicit drugs.

The information led to a joint operation between FRCS, Police and the Fiji Navy in seizing the bars from the island.

According to a statement from FRCS, the bars weighing 40 kilograms were retrieved and secured and after testing were confirmed to be cocaine.

They appeared in Sydney's Central Local court via video link from police custody.

The trio did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. They will remain in custody until their next appearance on October 26.

Turkish sailors sentenced over UK's biggest cocaine haul

The 2,903 kilograms of cocaine was found on a ship intercepted off the east coast of Scotland last year after some swift international co-operation between Britain and Tanzania.

The discovery was the biggest class A drug find ever made in Britain.

The traffickers had hidden the drugs, wrapped in 128 bales together weighing as much as a grown elephant, in a tank deep within the hull of the vessel.

The haul, worth AU$865 million, was being shipped over to the Netherlands after travelling from South America via Guyana and Tenerife, prosecutors said.
