On Thursday, Governor Undialu managed to bring peace between the leaders of Sai Apa and Talira clans, whose confrontations claimed 51 lives since 2014.

Both parties agreed to end the fights and compensate the 51 deceased from both sides. 

Youths from Butibam village have set more than 5 houses at Bumbu alight following the death of their wantok, allegedly at the hands of settlers.

According to reports on ground, the young man from Butibam had just returned from a night out and accompanied by his friend, were waiting for a shop at 8^th Street to open so they could get something to eat. This was around 6-7am on Saturday, September 8^th.

The clash resulted in two deaths, seven critical injuries, six houses burnt down and other properties damaged.

Two vehicles, trade stores including six houses were burnt down in the process after failed mediation.

Police intervened early yesterday morning, rounding up to 100 men who were brought to the Gerehu Police Station. 

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou and his men met with both sides, where a compromise was reached between community leaders.

ENB provincial police commander, Joseph Tabali, said the crux of the issue was similar to that of Gelegele; constant harassment and attack of students and staff by locals in surrounding villages.

“Those nearby villagers have been attacking students and robbing them when they catch bus from Kokopo to the campus,” PPC Tabali told Loop PNG.

He further pointed out a number of cases that had eventually led to the clash on Sunday, May 27^th.

ENB provincial police commander, Joseph Tabali, said the fight, which started on Saturday, May 26^th, ended yesterday (May 28^th). It stemmed from frustrations by villagers who were subject to continuous harassment by youths from the neighbouring village of Nodup.

“Yesterday morning (May 28) an adult male from Malakuna number 4 was seriously wounded,” said Tabali.

“We were looking for (Nodup) suspects when he was attacked from behind.

“He was rushed to the Vunapope General Hospital but died because of loss of blood.”

What started off as an argument between a youth and a taxi driver spiraled into a full-blown standoff as opportunists with weapons started chasing commuters and vendors.  

“It looked like a tribal fight,” Philip Counsel, who was on the scene at that time, told this newsroom.

“I saw men with weapons such as bush knives rushing towards the crowd, chasing the innocent members of the public.

“Mothers who were selling food, children, young women and men ran for their lives.”

According to a resident, a man from the Highlands region had gone into town to purchase betelnut during the day when he was allegedly attacked by a known thug in the town.

The criminal forced the man to hand over his belongings but he refused, leading to him getting stabbed.

The witness said the victim's relatives later came in busloads during the night and attacked people in the town, where an innocent man was caught in the commotion and is now nursing serious injuries.

This is the cry of the people from neighbouring Central villages who witnessed what they described as another unnecessary buai incident that disturbed their peace.

According to a villager from west Mekeo, a few days ago, a man from the Highlands region was allegedly killed in Kerema town, Gulf Province, whilst on a buai trade trip there.

Relatives of the man, in busloads, retaliated and attacked people along the highway to Kerema.

A man in Kerema town is reportedly nursing serious slash wounds.

Martin Kepon Ratu's family was caught off guard at 5 this morning when some aggrieved Goilala people in the community attacked them in what was believed to be a retaliation.

According to police personnel on ground, the incident started when the body of a young man from Goilala was discovered in the early hours of this morning.

However, Ratu says his family has fallen victim to baseless assumptions.

"We were still asleep when the fight started. We had no idea they were going to attack because we did not know what started the fight,” the businessman stated.
