Charly Black

Jamaica’s underground genre

That’s what Jamaican singer Charly Black said when asked about how much of dancehall was expected during his performance at The Cosmopolitan in Port Moresby.

For those who don’t know what dancehall is, it is an underground genre that emerged from Jamaica, at least two decades after Roots Reggae.

According to Jamaicanmusic.com, it is often referred to as reggae's ‘rebellious cousin’.

Just like other music genres, it has evolved and redefined over time. And while it is mostly confused to be reggae, Jamaicanmusic.com states that the two are very different.

PNG fans impress at concert

It wasn’t just Party Animal fans sang along to.

Even Jamaican nationals at the concert were pretty impressed to hear the PNG audience singing along to other Charly Black songs like Nicest, Buddy Buddy and Wine and Kotch.

Charly Black arrived in the country on Saturday and took to the stage of The Cosmopolitan club early Sunday morning for a one-time performance only.

It was a packed house with the super club filling as early as 9pm on Saturday night, forcing the doors to close by 12am.

Charly Black tickets out

The concert is set for February 3.

This leaves the Cosmopolitan the challenge of selling out in 1 week.

But general manager Martin Sherry is confident to have a full house on the night.

The Jamaican dancehall sensation is the voice behind favourite party anthem: Party Animal.

He will be performing for one night only at the super club, here in Port Moresby.

He was supposed to visit PNG in October of 2017, but this visit was postponed until this year.

This Australia-PNG-New Zealand tour is his first time out of Jamaica.
