Censorship Board

Censorship Board out to review internet usage

The objective is to develop policies that ensure the safe use of the internet, particularly in filtering undesired materials such as explicit photographic content.

During a courtesy call to the Acting Provincial Administrator Leo Mapmani, Acting Executive Manager Strategic Policy and Coordination, Nickson Kaido clarified the board's mission. The focus is on regulating content delivered in Papua New Guinea, especially on TV channels, to ensure it complies with established standards.

Will Beauty and the Beast pass our Censors?

The question pops up after the Disney film has come under fire in some countries, being the first Disney film to feature a “gay” character.

Malaysia postponed its release, Russia has given a 16+ rating preventing children from seeing it and parents in a congregation in Singapore have been warned of the “homosexual content” by a bishop.

Censorship Board to execute operational plan

The Annual Operational Plan provides a guideline for each of its divisions to follow and execute their work plans.

Chief Censor, Steven Mala states that about 80 percent of the programs are ongoing whilst 20 percent represent new initiatives and outstanding activities carried forward from previous years.

Mala pointed out that the main constraint would be funding however, it should not be used as an excuse for not attaining any real time results.

Warning issued on fake items online

The Censorship Board is now taking a step further in monitoring social media sites like facebook and twitter for fake contraband items being sold online.

This was after the Censorship Board carried out a raid on January 12 on someone who was using a popular local  facebook page (named) to sell Sex Enhancement Products or SEP’s which are prohibited by the Health Department.
