Shannen Doherty reveals her cancer has spread

"I had breast cancer that spread to the lymph nodes, and from one of my surgeries we discovered that some of the cancer cells might have actually gone out of the lymph nodes," Doherty said. "So for that reason, we are doing chemo, and then after chemo, I'll do radiation."

Doherty, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2015, called the mastectomy "traumatic and horrible." But said the trauma of the surgery hit her when she got fitted for a new bra.

Artificial Intelligence 'outsmarts cancer'

The data, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, showed some tumours shrank by around a quarter.

The compound will now be taken into more advanced trials.

Scientists said we were now in an explosive stage of merging advances in computing with medicine.

Spotting every difference between a cancerous and a healthy cell is beyond even the brightest human minds.

So the US biotechnology company Berg has been feeding as much data as its scientists could measure on the biochemistry of cells into a supercomputer.

Village mum encourages females to get cancer checks

Atta is married with four teenage daughters and lives in the village with her family.

She was involved in the recent cancer awareness program carried out in her village by the PNG Cancer Foundation.

Atta thanked PNGCF for the initiative in educating the village women as this was an eye opener for many of them to get checked up.

She said they appreciated the awareness program as many women didn’t know about the different types of cancer, their symptoms and prevention and most times it is just negligence.

Cancer awareness plans for 2016

Cancer Awareness Coordinator Grace Rudukka says plans have been put together and are beginning  for doing remote mobile awareness in the nine Morobe districts for the year of 2016.

The awareness will be internally funded and will be focused directly on mouth and breast cancer awareness in Morobe Province.

Because the awareness will be funded internally, and not from donor funding they have prioritized it for maintenance and much needed equipment. Staff will be undergoing training starting now until February which will also be extended to rural health workers by mid-year.

Teen's generosity comes full circle with cancer diagnosis

Two days after Aurora Brown learned she had kidney cancer this fall, she sent a Facebook message to her former principal, Courtney Vashaw, who had been diagnosed last spring with a rare and aggressive form of soft tissue cancer. Brown and other seniors at Profile Junior-Senior High School in Bethlehem received national attention when they donated $8,000 to Vashaw that they had raised for a class trip.

Smokeless tobacco users exposed to more nicotine, cancer-causing chemical

More research is needed on the toxic components of smokeless tobacco products and the health of people who use them, write the researchers from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"It’s not uncommon for people to use smokeless tobacco as an alternative to cigarettes in an attempt to wean themselves off smoking," said Dr. Frank Leone, who is director of the University of Pennsylvania's Comprehensive Smoking Treatment Program in Philadelphia. "There are much safer ways to substitute sources of nicotine."

Processed meats rank alongside smoking as cancer causes

The report from the WHO’s cancer arm, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, said there is enough evidence to rank processed meats as group 1 carcinogens, because of a causal link with bowel cancer.

It places red meat in group 2A, as “probably carcinogenic to humans”. Eating red meat is also linked to pancreatic and prostate cancer, the IARC says.

Women challenged to get tested for cancer

Father of cancer victim Rex Iniganda from Okapa in the Eastern Highlands Province said a lot of our women don’t want to get tested as they hide behind cultural ideas and taboos.

Iniganda said because of these cultural taboos they fear going to get checked at medical facilities that are available.

“I encourage women and young girls to please take up the courage to get checked and get treated.

“The earlier detection is made, the better. Prevention is better rather than being afraid to get checked up,” he said.
