Squash to shift focus to Doubles

Despite results not going their way over the weekend in the Men’s and Women’s Singles, head coach Marc Forster said there were still positives to take away from the performances of the three.

“Junior (Madako) needs to keep up the standard and keep solid. Youngsters Feanor and Amity will come away with an understanding now of what it takes to be a professional like the players they’re seeing here,” said Forster.

“But all is going well, they’re still in the game.”

The Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles will start on Wednesday, August 3. 

Athletics Announce Team For Games

However, Athletics PNG held off making any formal announcement of the team to ensure that only those athletes who were fit and ready to compete at the Games would be included in the final team.

The team includes 10 male and eight female athletes, 17 of whom who were nominated last year by the PNG Olympic Committee and endorsed by the Justification Committee.

President Tony Green said that the US based athletes selected were advised earlier this year for obvious reasons, as this had implications for their movements after the Mini Games in Saipan.

34 Athletes Confirmed For Commonwealth Games

Team PNG Chef de Mission, Michael Henao, this week said "with 23 days to go before the games and we’re pleased to announce that 35 athletes from the endorsed six sports are now hard at training.

Henao said this including 20 Athletes, who just returned from the recent Pacific Mini Games at the Northern Marianas.

Team PNG will be competing in Athletics, Boxing, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.

He said of these sports, four athletes have qualified under the Regional Qualification Process confirmed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). 

Kaputin To Carry PNG Flag At Commonwealth Games

The Team will attend the Games from the 25th of July to the 8th of August, 2022.

Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee President Sir John Dawanicura announced this during the combined Welcome for the Pacific Mini Games back from Northern Marianas and Farewell for Team PNG to the Commonwealth Games on Monday evening, at the Gateway Hotel.

Sir John said that the flag bearer reveal is an important role and ceremony in the lead up to the opening ceremony.
