Fuel assistance for Enga road works

BNL Country Director, Dr Ila Temu, and Wabag Member of Parliament and State Minister for Fisheries and Marine Resources, Dr Tom Lino, signed the MOU in Port Moresby on October 15th, 2019.

Under the MOU, BNL will provide fuel assistance to the Authority currently undertaking a project to upgrade and properly establish the Wabag-Maramuni Road as well as constructing and expanding other important roads in the district.

BNL has agreed under the MOU to provide fuel for the next six months on roadworks machinery being used to construct and upgrade the roads.

Injured mine worker passes away

He was fatally injured in a shooting incident at the mine on the night of 29 September.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick Gold, Mark Bristow, and the Chairman of Zijin Mining, Chen Jinghe, made the following comments this morning: “We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Samuel Marefa, an Asset Protection Officer at the Porgera Mine who sustained a serious gunshot injury on the night of 29 September.

K668,000 to subsidise MAF flights

“Great news for the new year!” commented Todd Aebischer, Country Director of MAF PNG.

K494,000 of the grant is to provide flight subsidies for travel with MAF to/from destinations within Enga Province and K174,000 is to assist agencies in the delivery of rehabilitation supplies to other earthquake-affected communities.

MAF aircraft serve rural communities with hundreds of life-saving aeromedical retrievals every year, flying over 30,000 passengers, bringing tonnes of produce to market, and carrying relief and development materials to isolated airstrips.

Porgera Mine reports damage to power generation plant

This followed a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the area on Monday, 26 February.

BNL executive managing director, Richmond Fenn, said the earthquake epicentre was located approximately 90km South West of the Porgera mine, close to the mine’s power generation plant at Hides.

“While the mine itself appears to have been unaffected by the quake, our primary power generating facility located some distance away in Hides has sustained damage, and is now offline,” Fenn said.

Gazettal applications for PNG’s largest protected areas

PJV environment manager Charlie Ross and Dr. Thomas presented the applications to the Minister for Environment & Conservation and Climate Change and Member for Kompiam-Ambum, John Pundari, in Port Moresby on Thursday, 28 September.

The gazettal applications cover two of the largest conservation areas in Papua New Guinea.

Call to reintroduce TCS for Highlands Highway

BNL General Manager, Operations, Damian Shaw, revealed this during the recent PNG Mining and Petroleum Investment Conference in Sydney, Australia.

Shaw told the conference that 2016 was a troublesome year, especially for them as operators of the Porgera Gold Mine.

“It’s our key piece of infrastructure that enables us to bring supply of goods into the Enga Province.

Parliament to make amendments on tax measures

Medical team treats 112 local people

Some of them had arthritis, skin infections, backache, antenatal care and also more common illnesses such as malaria, dysentery and pneumonia.  

Barrick (Niugini) Limited (BNL), operator of the Porgera Gold Mine, recently led a team on a medical patrol to the area.

The village, located about 116km downstream from the mine, is in the Kopiago District and has a health centre that serves about 5,000 people from five Local Level Government (LLG) council wards.

The health centre is operated by the Mambisanda Agency of the Lutheran Mission based in Wapenamanda, Enga.
