This is because the number of prisoners in all correctional institutions in PNG is three times the total number of correctional officers throughout the country.

The total number of detainees throughout the country is over 4,000 while the number of Correctional Service officers stands at 1,451.

With the population increasing, the number of prisoners is also increasing.

ACP Mondiai on routine visit to Baiyer

Leaders Simon Nais and Bruce Kumin welcomed Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nema Mondiai into the district while on a visit to police personnel at Baiyer Police Station on Monday.

Both were thankful that their Highlands Police chief had time to visit police personnel on the ground and see how they are carrying out policing in their district.

Mondiai will not tolerate ill-discipline and incompetency in the force

"I won't go easy on those police personnel who do not perform to expectation but abuse and misuse powers. I will strictly make it my business in my command. If you don't follow simple rules and regulations, I will deal with you,” says Mondiai.

He said this when addressing police personnel at Baiyer Police Station during his tour of the Highlands region.

He says he would like to see more police personnel in the rural areas, where the population is.
