Rellie Kaputin stars again on the US track events

Kaputin led her West Texas A&M University team to their fourth consecutive Lone Star Conference Indoor Championships as she won all three jumping events, setting two PNG National records in the process.

First up was the long jump where her last effort of 6.27m  was not only a record for the Conference but the eleventh best mark in the entire history of NCAA Division Two indoor competition.

Next was the high jump where Kaputin won the event on countback in a seasons best 1.71m.

Wisil sets new national record in 200m heats

On her way to completing the sprint double at the ACT Championships, Wisil set a new national record of 23.23 secs in the 200m heats and equaled her personal best of 11.29 seconds in the 100m, edging out Breen who ran 11.33. 

Breen is said to be a little behind where she normally is at this stage of the season, following some hamstring concerns but was very happy with her races at the weekend.

Nelson Stone stays focused for Samoa Games

Nest as he is called, will return from a spell because of injuries to his knee and a recent hamstring to his right leg.

 In an exclusive with Loop PNG, Stone said he is currently under High Performance Sports Rehabilitation program under great care of Simon Morris and he is getting better and is preparing ahead for the upcoming events.

“I would like to go all the way to 2019 in for the Tong Pacific Games and win the 400m for the third time and go down as first person to win the 400m sprint three times.

Rio 2016: Bolt storms to 200m gold

The majestic Usain Bolt once again broke new ground at Rio 2016 by storming to a third successive Olympic 200 metre title and the eighth gold medal of his illustrious career.

Bolt made history last weekend when he became the first man to win the 100m on three occasions, a time of 9.81 seconds enough to get the better of nearest rivals Justin Gatlin and Andre De Grasse.

Usain Bolt was unsurprised to see Justin Gatlin fail to make the final of the 200 metres at Rio 2016, claiming the American is "slowing down".

Reigning champion and world record holder Bolt booked his place in the final by winning his heat in a season's best 19.78 seconds, though Andre De Grasse ran him close to the line.

Thompson holds off Schippers to claim sprint double

Elaine Thompson claimed a remarkable sprint double at Rio 2016 as she held off world champion Dafne Schippers to take gold in the 200 metres.

Schippers came into the race as the overwhelming favourite having beaten Thompson to World Championship gold last year and in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Tougher road ro Rio say Pacific Games champions

Sprint king Ratu Banuve Tabakaucoro and javelin thrower Leslie Copeland say they will both have to go to other IAAF sanctioned meets to try and qualify for Rio.

Tabakaucoro clocked 10.55seconds in winning the 100meters final but the qualifying time is 10.16seonds.

“I’ll have to go to the World Championships in Beijing (China) to try and qualify,” said Tabakaucoro.

“It’s tougher now but achievable.”

More medals on offer in track and field

The first event, which is the women’s heptathlon long jump (event number 5),  will start proceedings at 3:30pm and the men’s 4x400 metres relay at 7:55pm will cap off what is expected to be another fun filled night.

Host nation Papua New Guinea are tuned up for another medal haul and with their recent dominance in the female sprints and men and women 400m clean sweep of medals,  the host venue is expected to be packed again.

In the women’s 100m and men’s 110m hurdles, PNG runners are the current champions and are clear favourites to maintain those tags.
