Over 6,000 outstanding bench warrants

The focus of the event is to bridge the gap between the community and criminal justice system.

In his opening remarks, Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika stressed on the need to build trust with the community and get involved in community engagement, which would help in their efforts to reduce the 6,721 outstanding bench warrants in the country.

A bench warrant or warrant of arrest, is an order, issued by either a magistrate or judge, for police to apprehend a defendant or accused. 

Police called on to improve criminal procedures

He made the statements today after the Committal Court formally dismissed his case on three counts involving allegations that he tried to pervert the course of justice when he consented to a stay application to stop the arrest of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill for official corruption on June 17, 2014.

He said police must improve the Criminal procedures pertaining to Warrants of Arrest so that ordinary citizens can be fairly treated under the Law.
