ANGAU conducts clinical checklist

The National Health Service Standards toolkit paves the way for the implementation of the National Health Plan 2021-2030.

The Morobe Provincial Health Authority is the first PHA to conduct its National Health Service Standards workshop – from July17th-21st – following the advocacy workshop of the national health plan in Madang last year.

Morobe PHA’s chief executive officer, Dr Kipas Binga, said the first workshop was for staff at the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital while a second one is being planned for workers in public health.

More survivors treated

Prior to the new building’s opening in March 2019, the FSC could only assist about 15 people a day. Now the Centre can assist an additional 12 people a day while maintaining privacy and offering a safe space for survivors.

FSC Nurse Manager, Sister Anastacia Wakon, said the poor condition of the previous building impeded the FSC staff’s ability to respond to the increasing number of survivors presenting for treatment. The facility was too small for the number of clients treated, the roof leaked, and the centre flooded when it rained.

Hold CS officers accountable: Staff

The incident occurred after a CS officer from Buimo passed away at the Emergency Department.

While Buimo jail commander, Michael Wundia, has apologised, the staff say his officers’ behaviour were criminal in nature.

ANGAU’s Emergency Department has 32 staff ranging from specialists to cleaners, and they treat 75 to 100 “very sick” patients per day.

New ANGAU ward handed over

Johnstaff International Development handed over the keys to the state-of-the-art paediatric ward in a small ceremony at the ANGAU Memorial Provincial Hospital.

“It’s all about strengthening the health outcomes for Lae and Morobe Province in general,” project director of the project delivery office – ANGAU redevelopment, Dave Lavers, made this statement during the handing over of keys to the Morobe Provincial Health Authority.

GG pledges to support cancer initiatives

He said whilst poor lifestyle choices is a contributing factor, the non-availability of cancer treatment facilities and equipment means many people cannot access treatment to control the disease.

Addressing the management of Lae’s Angau Memorial Hospital recently, the Governor General made know his intention to support the hospital and its initiatives to acquire cancer treatment equipment.

“Cancer cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. So we need facilities for that. We badly need oncologists in the country also,” he stated.

Keeping children in the ward entertained

Unfortunately, it can be a disheartening experience for those children suffering from illnesses, who have to stay indoors, especially in a hospital.

For children at the Angau Memorial Hospital Children’s Ward, the donation of a TV set and a range of channels to view from will try to bring some comfort to them whilst they undergo treatment.

Over the weekend, the Digicel Lae office donated a 40-inch flat screen TV and a Playbox and antenna. The gift comes with a lifetime free to view subscription to the children’s ward at the hospital.

Search for missing three continues in Watut

Watut LLG manager Raune Jombat, when contacted late yesterday afternoon, said no bodies have been recovered as search ceased for the night and will continue today.

Jombat said relatives have turned up in numbers, including from Wau and Bulolo, in search of the missing.

“The villagers are not giving up and have come in numbers to join the search,” Jombat said.

He said while four bodies have been recovered and are at the Angau Memorial Hospital, there is still hope that they will find the others.

Student dead, several injured in school brawl

Classes were suspended due to the incident as Police stepped up its presence at the school ensuring the safe passage of students leaving the school grounds.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr confirmed that a fight broke out at the school at around 10am where the male student was stabbed multiple times and was rushed to Angau Memorial Hospital but unfortunately died.

Wagambie said police were alerted and proceeded immediately to the school and dispersed the students.

A suspect armed with a homemade gun was pursued on foot but managed to escape.

Angau Hospital facing overwhelming odds

Yawing said while plans are underway to upgrade Malahang Health Centre to a level five facility so Angau can be a referral hospital, there is greater need for more urban health clinics in the province.

With 23 local level governments in the province, each ward needs to have a clinic for people to have accessibility to health services.

Yawing was speaking during the official opening of a health centre in Ward Two, within the heart of the city, on Tuesday.

“We have to leave Angau alone as a specialist hospital to eradicate many problems faced today,”  Yawing said.
