Police now stationed at Kainantu Gold Mine

Eastern Highland Provincial Police Commander, Alex N’Drasal, told Loop PNG that two units from the Mobile Squad 15 have been deployed to the site following the incident last Thursday.

It is alleged that the landowners went on a rampage at the mine site over outstanding landowner issues, one of which includes royalties.

N’Drasal said the situation has been contained with police presence ensuring normalcy in the area.

The incident occurred at around 7am on Sunday.

A source told TVWAN news that supporters of sitting MP Tobias Kulang tried to enter the counting centre when they were stopped by members of the public, which then led to a big fight.

Provincial Police Commander, Alex N’Drasal, confirmed that Kulang is in police custody in Goroka, firstly for his own safety, and to wait out his court hearing.

PPC N’Drasal said Kulang’s first court appearance this morning did not eventuate because there was no judge to see to it.

Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander, Alex N’Drasal, confirmed that the incident was caused by a minority of people, who were chased by those attending the rally.

A stone throwing fight soon broke out but police intervened.

Prime Minister and PNC Party leader, Peter O’Neill, was on ground to show support for his PNC party candidates in EHP on Tuesday.  

O’Neill told Loop PNG that disturbance was caused by a few people under the influence of alcohol.

“People sat down and listened for over 45 minutes of my speech,” said the PM.
