Suspect Arrested in Helicopter Shooting

The suspect, identified as Peter Yakos, has also been linked to the brutal killings and destruction of Kompiam Station.

Yakos was taken into custody and charged with five counts of wilful murder and one count of arson.

According to Commissioner of Police David Manning, the probe into the series of crimes that took place during the election has been ongoing, and new evidence has come to light, revealing the potential involvement of senior provincial and national leaders in the area at that time.

Police Prevent Boycott At Malakuna

Voters expressed disappointment after finding out that the names of most of the eligible voters were not on the electoral roll.

Village leader, Jeffery Makupit said his people have the right to exercise their democratic right, however have been denied.

“Most of the eligible voters did not find their names on the common roll so the Electoral Commission officers rejected them from casting their votes”

Police presence on the ground including the New Guinea Islands Commander ACP, Perou N’Dranou prevented the situation from escalating.

OC Restricts Spending Of Public Funds

Chief Ombudsman Commission, Richard Pagen in a statement said to avoid current Members of Parliament from being tangled during the campaign period by disturbing public funds towards service delivery in their respective electorates.

"The distribution of public funds as the PSIP, DSIP, LLG SIP, COVID and other development funds during the NGE period are an ongoing concern"

"From the day the issue of writs is issued up until the date when the new Government is formed and the new PEC and DDA have advised us of the change of bank account signatures. 

Gulf Pre-election Security Ops Launched

Present at the launch, Deputy Commissioner for Operations, Anton Billie said the leaders for the 11th parliament will be voted in this year by the people of Gulf and PNG and every Papua New Guinean of voting age is expected to make a vote that will determine their future.

Therefore, he urged the people of Gulf to vote wisely and elect their leaders without expecting any personal benefits or reward in return.

NA Endorses 61 Candidates

Among the 61 candidates are four women who are not new to the leadership space.

Former Governor for Eastern Highlands, Julie Soso will contest the Eastern Highlands Regional seat,  former Morobe Acting Provincial Administrator, Shiela Harou for Morobe Regional seat, NA Party General Secretary, Joyce Grant who has 20 years experience of managing NA party will contest the Kiriwina-Goodenough Open and Mary Morola, former Secretary for the Department of Labour standing for Kerema Open.

No room for complacency: Manning

The two-day conference was attended by Assistance Police Commissioners, Police Commissioner David Manning, Deputy Commissioner Operations Anton Billie and, PNG Defence Force and Correctional Services officials. 

Last week marked the end of the planning phase with the transition now into the pre-deployment and operation proper phases.

CS Ready For Election Operation

Commissioner Pokanis said 500 CS officers will be directly involved with the Police, Defence Force and the Electoral Commission officers during the election to be deployed out of their area of operation.

He said the others that will remain in their respective provinces will be working together with the electoral commission and the police and those who will be participating directly in the 2022 National General Election.

Madang police ready for election

Provincial Police Commander Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang, they started the route march last month. They will continue this exercise every Wednesday’s and Saturday’s until deployment. PPC Rubiang said they are not fully equipped, but officers must be physically fit to walk long distances to ensure police presence is felt and seen during the election.
