Ryan Pini to swim this afternoon

Pini will race at 2:16pm Rio time (3:16am PNG time, Friday) and will swim in heat 2 of 6 of the butterfly event.

The world record for the 100 metres butterfly is held by Michael Phelps from the United States who set a time of 49.82 seconds back in 2009 in Rome, Italy.

Pini will be the fourth athlete from Team PNG to compete at Rio after Raymond Ovinou, Thadius Katua and Morea Baru.

Waiwai hails Baru’s performance

These were the words from PNG’s weightlifter, Morea Baru, straight after his lift at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Baru’s performance on Monday in the men’s 62kg division catapulted him into 6th place in the world.

This feat has matched the performance from Dika Toua, who also finished in 6th place at the Athens 2004 Olympics.

Chef de Mission for Team PNG, Emma Waiwai, who was on hand to watch Baru lift, said she was extremely proud of his performance.

Baru to lift tomorrow afternoon

Lifting in the men’s 62kg division, the lad from Hanuabada will take the stage to lift at 5pm (6am PNG time, Wednesday).

Baru is in Group A.

Baru, who is ranked 10th in the world in the men’s 62kg division, will be the third athlete from Team PNG to compete at Rio.

This is Baru’s first appearance at an Olympics event.

The first two athletes to compete were judo’s Raymond Ovinou and Thadius Katua from boxing.

The other 5 athletes from Team PNG will compete later during the week.

Karate among five given Olympic status

Their inclusion will see the newly chosen disciplines add 18 events to the Olympics program, and 474 athletes to the competition.

The number of athletes will be divided evenly among men and women, except for baseball and softball.

While an equal number of men’s and women’s teams will be invited to compete, baseball teams have 24 men apiece, while each softball team will have 15 women.
