USA coach attributes win to team’s determination

United States of America (USA) coach Michelle French has attributed her team’s victory in the quarterfinal to the players’ determination to win.

USA defeated Mexico on Friday in a close encounter 2-1 in the third quarter final of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup underway in Port Moresby.

French said the victory is a result of the hard determination of the team.

“The players played with the belief that they would give results end the end of the game.

“They felt 100 percent confident that they will get back into this game after the water break in the second half after trailing at halftime 1-0.”

French also admitted that it was a tough match and Mexico put up a good fight.

“Mexico was everything that we thought they would be and it was extremely difficult at times for us both in our defense and attack.

“I thought they executed their game plan extremely well.”

The coach gave credit to the two goal scorers, Ally Watt and Kelcie Hedge, who were substitutes coming off the bench in the second half.

“We actually call the substitutes game changers because that’s the expectation that we have for them.

“They both came in and managed to score so they did exactly what we asked them to do and I’m glad that they had that feeling and urge of coming in and changing the game for us,” she said.

USA will take on Korea DPR and Japan takes on France in the semi-final matches scheduled on Tuesday, November 29.
