United States fights back to top group

The United States of America (USA) has fought back to top Group C of the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after round two.

The tournament is underway in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from November 13-December 3 with 16 participating countries pooled in four groups.

USA has taken the lead on the points ladder for Group C, gaining three more points after defeating New Zealand 3-1 on Thursday, 17 November.

The North American team leads Group C on four points followed by New Zealand in second place on three points.

After two draw games against USA (nil all) and Ghana (2-2), France holds third place with two points and Ghana is behind on one point.

In Group A, unbeaten North Korea holds on to first place with six points after defeating Brazil 4-2 and Sweden 2-0.

Brazil shares three points with Sweden however, is in second place due to points for and against.

Host country PNG is yet to put a mark on the scoreboard after suffering two losses so far against Brazil 9-0 and Sweden 6-0. PNG plays North Korea on Sunday, 20 November.

In Group B, Spain remains on top with six points after thrashing Canada 5-0 in the first round and defeating Japan by one point (1-0) in the second round.

Japan and Nigeria share three points however, Japan is in second place due to points for and against.

Japan thrashed Nigeria 6-0 in the first round while Nigeria defeated Canada 3-1 in the second round. Canada is yet to master a win.

Favourites the reigning champions Germany is unbeaten in Group D retaining the top spot on six points after defeating Mexico 3-0 on Thursday.

South Korea bounced back to claim second place after defeating debutants Venezuela 3-0 on Thursday.

The Koreans share three points with the Mexicans however, take second place due to points for and against while Venezuela is yet to register a win.

Each team has one game each in the round robin before the finals. The top two teams of each group advance to the quarterfinals.
