Tumbe win season opener

Giru Waghi Tumbe registered the first win of the 2018 Digicel Cup season, beating the NCDC Port Moresby Vipers 26-12 today at the Sir John Guise Stadium.

Former SP Hunter and PNG Kumul forward, Henry Wan Noki got Tumbe on the board early in the 7th minute when he barged over to score.

The city boys hit back soon after winger Damien Herod snuck past the defence for a try.

Tumbe were impressive, dominating the remainder of the first half, crossing the line two more times through Israel Balio and Wari Molu.

Halfback Raven Jonah extended Tumbe's lead after kicking a penalty goal right in front of the sticks.

The score was left at 20-4 at the break.

Tumbe were hungry for more points and went on the attack right after kick off.

In the 60th minute, Joshua Nani broke through the Vipers’ defence to slam the ball down and push Tumbe further in front.

The visitors went to sleep shortly after and the Vipers capitalized.

This came from another former Hunter and Kumul, Thompson Teteh, striking twice in seven minutes.

But Tumbe had done enough holding on to win the season opener.

Jonah was awarded man of the match.
