Six-wicket defeat for global development squad

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Global Development Squad (WGDS) finished their series with a six-wicket defeat to the Hobart Hurricanes at Blacktown in Sydney on Friday.

In their fifth and final match of the week, the ICC WGDS, featuring some Sydney Thunder players, posted an impressive total of 8/138 off their allotted 20 overs with Chipo Tiripani (30) and Sterre Kalis (23) impressing with the bat again while former Australian Women’s Captain, Alex Blackwell, smashed 42 runs off just 22 balls in the middle order.

City Pharmacy PNG Lewas’ all-rounder, Veru Kila Frank, also made seven runs in the lower order.

In reply, the Hobart Hurricanes had no issues chasing down the total with V Pyke (58*) and G Redmayne (56) making the bulk of the runs to eventually win by six wickets with 13 balls remaining. Frank impressed with ball taking 1/18 off 2.5 overs while fellow City Pharmacy PNG Lewas’ team-mate, Kaia Arua (0/31), finished wicketless.

This loss meant that the ICC WGDS finished winless in their five matches against Sydney Thunder, Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes during week.

This WGDS is a joint initiative between the ICC, Cricket Australia and the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League with the aim to give players and coaches the chance to learn from each other, test their skills against world-class teams and experience new training environments and culture.
