Schnaubelt is just getting started

Gemma Schnaubelt is just getting started.

The 20-year-old from Central and New Ireland Province made her dream debut running on for the PNG Palais at last month’s HSBC Sydney Sevens.

It was truly a baptism of fire playing in front of thousands at Allianz Stadium on the world stage.

But it’s nothing she couldn’t handle.

“Running out of the tunnel I was nervous at first, but I knew once I made a tackle or took my first run, all those nerves would fade away,” Schnaubelt said.

“Representing PNG for the first time on the big screen, it’s a feeling that you can’t really describe. Not only was I representing my country but my family and myself and it’s one of the best feelings any athlete can feel.

“It’s overwhelming and to be able to do that it has been one of the best experiences ever.”

A utility player, Schnaubelt continues to strive to do better, whether it’s flying out on the wing or calling the shots at fly-half.

“One of the biggest things I learned playing against some of the best teams is to be confident in myself and have a go.

“Don’t be scared to have a run or run a move. If it doesn’t work out, as long as you tried that’s what’s important.

“I’m hoping to play in the the next tournament so I can show the world more of my skills and talent.”

And that’s not all.

The speedster is on her way to representing PNG again, this time in the code of touch football after being named in the downsized squad for the 2019 Pacific Games and 2019 Touch Rugby World Cup.

“Touch football has been my main sport growing up. I never thought about playing for PNG for touch but when the opportunity popped up I was more than happy to take it.”

This is her advice to youngsters who have dreams of donning the red, black and yellow one day:

“Always work hard for what you want and never give up. Earning a jersey for your country is not easy, it comes with a lot of hard work but if you put your mind to it, it’s there waiting for you.”
