PNG side improved despite the score line: Cole

PNG coach Lisa Cole commended her side for a better performance despite the 6-0 defeat at the boot of Sweden last night at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

In PNG’s previous encounter on Monday, the host nation of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup 2016 was humiliated by Brazil 9-0.

Cole, in a conference after the match, said she was proud of the girls’ performance playing against the European champions.

She said PNG has a long way to go to be competitive at the world stage.

“We are not as fit as other country, but have improved in the last 9 months in camp.”

Papua New Guinea did not qualify on merit for the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup but is participating as hosts.

Cole said injuries resulted in forced-substitution and fatigue got the better of the team.

The former USA international expects another uphill challenge when her charges face Group A leaders Korea DPR in their final match.

She praised goalkeeper Lavina Hola for outstanding glove works despite the losing margin.

Hola’s composure at the goal line was also acknowledged by the strong 9,123 spectators at the stands, who were behind her throughout the match.

Yvonne Gabong and Ramona Padio were other players who shone for the PNG side.

PNG plays Korea DPR on Sunday at National Football Stadium.
