Oceania Hockey says the continuation of the World Hockey League Rounds One and Two will ensure regular competition for Pacific teams and enable them to grow their relationships with other regions.
This month the International Hockey Federation announced a new international competition called the Hockey Pro League.
The league will start in 2019 with elite nations like Argentina, the Netherlands, Australia, Great Britain, India and New Zealand all involved.
The World Hockey League is being paired back as a result, with the top tier nations no longer involved.
But Oceania's Continental Development Officer Gill Gemming said the preliminary rounds will still take place every two years, which includes the tournament held in the Pacific Islands, with the winner advancing to the second round.
"World League Round One and Two has opened up opportunities for them to play against Asian nations and European nations that they would never have played before," she said.
"And I think they sort of feel now they can plan ahead for that event and the way that the calendar is working now it probably makes it easier for them to fundraise, knowing in advance that there will be a spot in those two events."
Gill Gemming said those competitions will offer important world rankings points to Pacific Islands nations "which will enable them to look to World Cup and to give them enough ranking points to go into other qualifiers that may come up."
The Fiji men finished bottom at the last World Hockey League Round 2 event in Dhaka in March.
Captain Hector Smith Junior said after that event Fiji Hockey's management intended to look into playing more matches in Asia, because travel between the various countries was not so far.
Gill Gemming said Oceania Hockey saw those sorts of relationships growing stronger in the years to come.
"It is the opportunity for them, not just playing on the field but for the administrators to develop relationships and sponsorship opportunities, particular in exchange of coaching and officiating ideas," she said.
"The more that they can have those opportunities the better and so this Intercontinental 5s that we have in Sydney in October, running beside Oceania Cup...
"At the moment we're waiting to hear back from two of those Asian team that are looking as a possibility of playing in this Hockey 5s competition and that will just cement that relationship that Fiji has started to develop."
