Meet the Orchids’ first try scorer

Naomi Kaupa was never given game time when she first took up the rugby league ball in 2011.

The Simbu lass shared her rugby league story with TVWan sports, recalling how her first hit was the hardest that she dropped the ball.

Last night though, Kaupa scored PNG Orchids’ first try against England in the 2017 Women’s Rugby League World Cup match.

If there’s one thing that Kaupa stands for, it’s ‘self-belief’.

Kaupa was probably the most excited raring to wear the red, black and gold jumper since making the Oil Search PNG Orchids team.

Her enthusiasm showed last night when she scored their first world cup try against the England lioness in Sydney, Australia.

Her first experience playing rugby league was one of the worst memories she’s had under her coach and uncle Steven Waula, playing for the Royals team in the nation’s capital.

However, Kaupa knew she could do better though and went on to make the Orchids team.

Although the Oil Search PNG Orchids recorded a loss against England, 36 points to 8, Naomi Kaupa will go down in history as the first try scorer for PNG in their first-ever world cup match.
