Lae will have world-class football stadium, reveals association

A leading soccer association in the country will soon have its own world-class stadium.

This will come to pass with the backing of its provincial government and counterpart funding from several interested overseas business houses.

Lae Football Association (LFA) in Morobe is by far Papua New Guinea Football Association’s biggest group in the country, with 39 participating clubs and over 300 players.

A world class double stadium would be an added bonus to its members and the development of the code in this soccer-loving province.

The association is one of the few that is running a full competition, apart from Port Moresby and other centres.

LFA secretary-general Haiveta Kivia said already the Morobe Provincial Government has approved a proposal submitted by the association.

While the amount is yet to be revealed, Lae City Manager Roy Kameng confirmed the proposal of the re-development of LFA has been approved by the Provincial Executive Council.

A proposal of K88 million for a double stadium, which is set to be one of the biggest soccer stadiums in the country, was submitted and Kameng said while the provincial government has come good, the association will have to source counterpart funding from business houses.

The proposed cost includes designs already done by architects.

Several business houses in Indonesia and Hyundai Korea have shown interest, with negotiations underway.
