Japan through to finals as Canada bows out

Canada ended its World Cup campaign on a low note going down to Japan 5-0 today at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The girls in red suffered their third loss in the tournament while Japan has made it through to the quarter finals.

Japan scored through Yui Hasegawa, top scorer Mami Ueno, Honoka Hayashi and Hina Sugita.

Ueno now has four goals to her name in this tournament.

Japan showed no mercy taking the lead at half time 2-0 in this last round of the group matches.

Hasegawa opened the score board for Japan scoring in the 25th minute of the match in front of a crowd of 5,439 people.

The mid fielder took a rebound and kicked an easy goal in front the net after it bounced off her opposing player who tried to stop the ball with her body in front of Canada's goal mouth.

In the process, Canada's goal keeper Lysianne Proulx was nowhere to be seen as she was out of her box in an attempt to save the ball from Japan's first attempt off the foot of forward Yuka Momiki.

Japan dominated the first half having 63 percent ball possession.

Ueno scored Japan's second goal 2-0 just 42 minutes into the game.

Despite an additional three minutes, Canada wasn't able to go past the Japanese strong backline to score, leaving Japan in the lead at half time.

Japan continued to dominate the game in the second half scoring three more goals.

The third goal 3-0 was scored by Yayashi from 10 metres out.

Hasegawa scored her second goal of the match in the 50th minute to extend Japan's lead 4-0.

Canada's simple errors and weak defense opened up for Japan to score its fifth goal 5-0 through Sugita in the 72nd minute.

Ueno was replaced by Meika Nishida in the 73rd minute and remained on the bench for the rest of the game.

Despite an additional time of four minutes, Canada struggled to make a breakthrough as Japan sailed through victory.

Canada was farewelled by a standing ovation from the crowd as they bowed out of the tournament.

Live Your Goals Player of the Match was awarded to Hasegawa for her outstanding performance.

The next match will get underway at 7pm between PNG and North Korea.
