France visit cheer squad community at Koki

The France FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup grand finalist team today made an exclusive visit to the homes of their Papua New Guinean cheer squad at Koki, Wanigela village in Port Moresby.

The whole community gathered with pride to show their passion for the team with smiles and warm cheers as the team arrived at the location.

Governor of NCD Powes Parkop present at the event was overwhelmed to have the team visit the local Wanigela community as he spoke highly of the fans that supported the team through to the finals.

France U20 Women’s head coach Gilles Eyquem said they were all speechless for this wonderful occasion and praised the community for their huge support.

“I don’t know if we are going to win the World Cup, but we already know we have stolen something from you. And that is your hearts.

“Since the beginning you were behind us and supporting us and for you, we will do anything to win,” head coach Eyquem said.

He added that on behalf of the team, “we are very happy to be here for you today and we are very proud of you.”

France Striker Marie-Charlotte Leger representing the team said it was a great adventure being here with the lovely people and the lovely country.

“Together in this great adventure we can accomplish it with one goal and it is to win the finals,” Leger said.

The team was then presented with woven bilums and Papua New Guinea caps as gifts from the community including traditional head dresses and hand bands from fans.

But the team could not resist when their cheer squad began their war cries, the whole team struck by emotions stood into an array as they joined the fans and sang along like they already knew the chant.

The NCD Governor on behalf of the community thanked the team for an honourable visit and applauded the cheer squad for their wonderful support that made the team feel at home.
