First timers in Motuan league tryouts

Rugby league is often perceived as a male dominated sport, especially in the Motuan villages in Port Moresby.

But this has changed in the past years as more women have come out to take part.

At least 12 teams from these villages, including Pari, Hanuabada, Tatana and Baruni, were present yesterday to compete in the first weekend of at least three rounds in the tournament.

This will see best players from some of these teams chosen to play in the women’s Hawks team.

The winning teams from this weekend will go into tryouts next weekend.

Each team was given three sets to play off.

The rugby nines proved to be a tough game for many of these players who are first timers, but they gave it their best.

The tournament was sponsored by Gogo Cola and coordinated by Dadi Toka Junior, who said this is the start of an annual tournament.

He said there is a wide range of choice from all of these players and they want the best team to represent the Motuans in the league competition.
