Eagles fly high as Patriots fall short in Super Bowl thriller

The Philadelphia Eagles have stunned the New England Patriots, scoring a late touchdown to win Super Bowl LII 41-33 in a thriller in Minneapolis.

The Patriots were hot favourites going into the game, with the combination of star quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick going for their sixth Super Bowl triumph.

But a year after the Patriots made a great escape to win Super Bowl LI from 25 points down against Atlanta, the Eagles managed to keep their composure and finish the job for the franchise's first-ever NFL title.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles — who had taken over from the injured starter Carson Wentz during the season — showed few nerves as he connected calmly with his receivers.

The Eagles eased some of the tension, by taking the opening kickoff and driving 67 yards downfield before having to settle for a field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Brady then led the Patriots on an almost identical drive, getting the Patriots down to the Eagles' eight-yard line before Sebastian Gostkowski hit a 26-yard field goal to tie the scores.

Philadelphia's offense was firing, however. Former Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount burned New England by breaking out a 36-yard run that set the Eagles up.

The following play saw Foles hoist the ball high into the end zone, where Alshon Jeffery leaped up for a great touchdown catch.

The Eagles missed their conversion, but they led 9-3.

Eagles edge further ahead in see-saw second quarter

New England went on the move again with Brady hitting Danny Amendola for a 50-yard gain.

Brady kept the chains moving early in the second quarter, and New England again got down to the eight-yard line, before sending Gostkowski out for a field goal, but he missed the kick to the left.

Both teams then exchanged quick possessions, before the Eagles got the ball back at their own 35.

Foles' passing arm was working well, and he hit Jeffery and tight end Zach Ertz for solid gains.

Finally Blount made the breakthrough, busting out a 21-yard run for a touchdown.

The Eagles went for a two-point conversion, but the pass failed, and despite their dominance, they only led 15-6.

New England answered with a 45-yard field goal from Gostkowski, but the Eagles got driving again.

Jay Ajayi gained 26 yards on the ground before Foles went deep along the right sideline for Jeffrey. The Eagles receiver had two grabs at it, but the ball spilled off his hands and into the air, where New England cornerback Stephon Gilmore was on hand to take a vital interception.

Brady then led his team 90 yards downfield, with James White running the ball in from 26 yards out for a touchdown. Another extra point went wide, but suddenly the Patriots were within three points close to half-time.

The Eagles had one last chance — Foles found Corey Clement who fended off the Patriots defence to make 55 yards to set up first and goal. They got to the one-yard line, but on fourth down coach Doug Pedersen opted against kicking a field goal.

His team was rewarded for the big call, when tight end Trey Burton took a hand-off from Foles, then doubled back and lobbed the ball into Foles' arms in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was good, and Philadelphia took a 22-12 lead into half-time.

JT returns for tamer half-time show

The focus then turned to entertainment as Justin Timberlake took his turn on stage for the half-time show.

In a nod to the host city of Minneapolis, Timberlake paid tribute to the late Prince, with a hologram of the famous rock star projected over the stage.

Timberlake played some of his big hits, but it lacked the drama of one of his earlier appearances, when Janet Jackson had an infamous "wardrobe malfunction" during their set.

As play resumed, in the back of everyone's minds, was the result of Super Bowl LI last year, where Brady and the Patriots were down 28-3 in the third quarter, before making a stunning comeback to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime.

In case anyone had forgotten, Brady came out firing after the break, hitting Rob Gronkowski four times on his opening drive of the half, including a five-yard touchdown pass to bring the game back to 22-19.

Foles and the Eagles were not letting the favourites run over them, and another big drive ensued.

Philadelphia mixed the run with Blount and Ajayi with passes to Nelson Agholor and Ertz before Foles fired a dart to Clement in the edge of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown.

It was a controversial call, as it appeared that Clement failed to get both feet down in bounds, but the play stood after a review and the Eagles led by 10.

Tom Brady's 40-year-old throwing arm was still holding up, however.

The Patriots quarterback was still finding holes in the Eagles' secondary, and he led another 75-yard drive, hitting Chris Hogan for a 26-yard strike to keep his team right in it. Gostkowski added the extras and it was 29-26 after three quarters of play.

Brilliant final quarter produces classic finish

The Eagles added a field goal in the early stages of the fourth quarter to lead by six, but Brady was finding his range and the Patriots were soon charging again.

He hit receiver Danny Amendola on three straight passes to move into range, and then he got the ball to his favourite receiver Gronkowski for a four-yard touchdown catch.

The Patriots led for the first time in the game, ahead 33-32 with 9:22 left.

Foles was not finished, throwing another touchdown pass to Zach Ertz — which needed a review to confirm it —and the Patriots were under the pump. Brady tried to lead another comeback, but he was sacked and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Philadelphia.

The Eagles tried to run out the clock but settled for a field goal.

New England had one last chance, but a Brady Hail Mary bounced off hands in the end zone to seal the win for Philadelphia.

The win was Philadelphia's first title, after losses in Super Bowls XV and XXXIX.

Brady broke his own Super Bowl record, passing for 505 yards (and three touchdowns), but Foles — who had 373 yards passing, three touchdowns and one interception — was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.

Foles began his career at the Eagles (2012-14), then had stints at the then St Louis Rams (now Los Angeles Rams) and Kansas City Chiefs, before returning to Philadelphia and gaining a start in week 14 after Wentz tore his ACL.

He led the Eagles past Atlanta in the NFC Divisional play-off, and then helped defeat the Minnesota Vikings 38-7 in the NFC Championship game to earn his team a spot in the Super Bowl.
