Doriga makes debut for PNG Barramundis

Kipling Doriga received his Baggy Black Cap after playing in the first One Day International (ODI) against Scotland in Dubai last Friday 24th November, 2017.

Current Hebou PNG Barramundis  Assistant Coach and former Hebou PNG Barramundis player, John Ovia presented Doriga with his own “Baggy Black” cap before the match, becoming the 118th Papua New Guinean to represent the country at senior level.

“It’s a pleasure to have received my own Baggy Black. It has been very hard but I must thank Gold for this wonderful opportunity that I have been given,” said Doriga after the match.

Doriga played a pivotal role in helping the Hebou PNG Barramundis reach a modest 147 runs after slumping to a disastrous 5/10 after six (6) overs in the first ODI. Hebou PNG Barramundis’ Captain, Assad Vala (40) and Doriga (34), batting at number seven (7) put on a 69-run sixth wicket partnership to guide the Barramundis away from embarrassment before eventually losing by six (6) wickets to a strong Scotland outfit.

“I am proud to play for my country and to have batted with Assad (Vala) in my first ODI, a player with a clear mindset and a good character was an honour,” said Doriga.

Doriga, who hails from Kirakira played tribute to his proud up bringing where he learned how to play the game of cricket.

“Cricket is very big in our village, Kirakira. Fifteen years ago I fell in love with the game when I was the waterboy for the local team. Since then cricket has become my number one sport. I would also like to thank my late brother Fele Baru who passed away earlier in the year who I truly trusted and helped me with my cricket,” said Doriga.

Doriga plays for Raukele Cricket Club in the Port Moresby Cricket Association (POMCA) and worked as a Development Offer at Cricket PNG for a number of years.
