Defence snatch victory from Tigers

Defence (2) had the last laugh with a try right on the fulltime siren to beat Kone Tigers (2) 18-14 this morning in the men’s matches on day two of the MRDC 9s at the National Football Stadium.

Three tries to Kone Tigers gave them the upper hand leading at halftime with the score at 14-6.

But Defence muscled their way back into the game and narrowed the lead in the second half after Alex Ovia crossed over.

The try was converted by Kennedy Jirua to make it 14-12 with three minutes of play left.

It seemed Kone Tigers had done enough to scrape home with a two point win as the fulltime siren sounded.

But with one last play close to the line, Defence sent Timothy Pola charging over to slam the ball down near the posts and snatch victory from the Kone Tigers.

In the other men’s results from today, Magani (2) def. Dobo Warriors (2) 12-8, Tarangau (2) def. Brothers (3) 16-4, Hohola Flies (1) def. Paga Panthers (1) 16-6, Royals (1) def. Dobo Warriors (1) 14-12 and Hawks (1) def. Souths (1) 22-0.

In the women’s matches, Royals def. Tarangau 20-0 and Butterflies def. Hohola Flies 20-8.

Day three games will start tomorrow at 10am.
