Barras and Scotland evenly poised after day one

The Hebou PNG Barramundis finished day one of the ICC Intercontinental Cup (2015-2017) at 7/285, with Vani Vagi Morea (53) and Sese Bau (51) posting half-centuries.

Opening batsmen Vani Vagi Morea and Tony Ura got the innings off to a rapid start, racing to 27 runs in less than five overs before Ura was dismissed by Safyaan Sharif.

Lega Siaka (48) then joined Morea to put on a 51-run partnership for the second wicket.

The Barras found themselves in trouble two balls later when captain Assad Vala was sent back to the sheds, leaving the Barras at 3/78.

Siaka and Sese Bau then steadied the ship before Siaka fell two runs shot of his half century, with Sharif taking all four wickets at the top order.

Bau (51) fell soon after making his half century to Alasdair Evans to put the home side in a vulnerable position at 5/172.

Mahuru Dai (24) and Jack Vare-Kevere (42) then chipped in to make some valuable runs, before Chad Soper (32*) and Norman Vanua (17*) guided the Barras to 7/285 when bad light stopped play.

“We are in a good position even though we could have done more with the batting, but that is the way it is,” said Barras wicket keeper, Jack Vare-Kevere.

“A number of us had starts and it would have been great if a number of us could have converted them into bigger scores.

“We haven’t spoken about our plans on day two other than batting, batting and batting and then see how we go.”

Day 2 of the ICC ICUP started at 9:42am today.
