Amean has no regrets

“Playing for the SP Hunters has been the best experience ever,” says Stargroth Amean.

Speaking after training yesterday, Amean said he has no regrets about his decision to leave rugby league and focus on school.

“If I had the chance to go back, I wouldn’t change anything.

“Knowing the boys, they’re more like family to me. Leaving them and the coaching staff has been so hard.”

The 27-year-old from Wabag, Enga Province, explained his reasons.

“It’s all about studies. I’m doing my Science Foundation year externally at UPNG. It’s been four years since I left school to play for the Hunters and represent my country.

“It’s been a hard decision for me but some things have to be sacrificed so I’ve retired from the Hunters and representative football to pursue an education.”

Asked about the highlight of his career, Amean said it was winning the Intrust Super Cup grand final last year, but added that it was not part of his decision to leave the Hunters.

“My lifetime goal in rugby league ever since I started playing was to one day wear the Kumul jumper, to feel it against my skin.

“To wear it five times and play for the Hunters was a bonus. My main goal was always to play for the Kumuls. It’s been a blessing for me.”

Amean finished by saying he will still be actively involved in rugby league.

“Definitely I’ll give back what I’ve learned. I will go down to the grassroots level and in the Digicel Cup and give back.”
