14 records set by PNG swim team

14 records (12 personal best and 2 national record times) were set by the PNG swim team at the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Windsor, Canada, this month.

The 6-day competition saw the world’s best swimmers from more than 175 countries take part from December 6-11.

The PNG team consisted of 7 swimmers: Livingston Aika (19), Stanford Kawale (21), Ryan Maskelyne (17), Shanice Paraka (17), Ryan Pini (34), Ashley Seeto (28) and Sam Seghers (22) with coach Greg Fasala, manager Sarenah Pini and physio Matthew Natusch.

Personal best times were swum with 4 Age (17 years), 1 Senior (18-24 Age), 7 Open and 2 Masters (25-29 Age) national records set.

Seeto recalled his experience from the Championships, saying it was amazing.

“At the tender age of 28, the FINA World Championships was my first international swimming competition on the world stage. It was an amazing experience, seeing various warm-up routines and superstitions to rubbing shoulders with the world’s most elite swimmers and coaches.

“Being in this environment brought out the best in my swimming ability and it has given me the bug to strive for more.

“I was fortunate enough to be part of the cohesive PNG swim team and support team.

“The experiences from the competition and time spent with my team in Windsor will be forever frozen into my memories,” said Seeto.
