Young officers urged to work together

Defence Minister Solan Mirisim has urged young officers of the region’s defence force to interact and forge a professional network across countries to secure the region in the face of challenges.

The officers are attending the Future Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby.

Minister Mirisim, when speaking at the welcome dinner, told the young officers that it is extremely important to work together, and more closely.

He said the region is now the focus of global attention because of its vast marine, mineral and agriculture resources, including our human capital.

The Future Leaders’ Summit was attended by young officers from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, with representatives from France and Chile.

The Summit is an initiative of defence ministers of the region who meet biennially to discuss security concerns facing the region.

The idea is to get future defence leaders to work together and blend ideas to understand and address security challenges of tomorrow that the region may confront.

A total of 22 young officers are attending the summit, including three from the Department of Defence and three from the PNG Defence Force.

A representative each from PNG Customs, the Department of Prime Minister and NEC are also attending.

The two-day Summit started on Tuesday and ends today.
